Bone Spur in the Back

Although it is most frequently a symptomless condition, having a bone spur in the back can develop into a debilitating affliction, keeping you from performing even seemingly simple daily activities or enjoying many of your favorite hobbies. This is because a bone spur, when it grows large enough, can push upon the nerve roots in the spine as well as the spinal cord itself. This inhibits the nerve from transmitting signals properly and can cause the following symptoms:

  • Pain
  • Tingling
  • Numbness
  • Loss of mobility/flexibility
  • Weakness
  • Muscle spasms
  • Headaches (cervical bone spurs)

Treatments for a Bone Spur in the Back

Treatments for a bone spur can vary depending on a number of factors ranging from the patient's age, physical health, severity of symptoms, location of the bone spur in the back, and much more. Only a doctor who has personally examined a patient and their charts can prescribe an effective and safe treatment plan. This regimen may include one or more common methods, including:

  • Rest
  • Painkillers - over the counter and/or prescription
  • Epidural cortisone shots
  • Anti-inflammatory medicine
  • Stretching
  • Physical therapy

If these treatments fail to provide enough relief so the patient can have an acceptable quality of life, then the only remedy left is surgery. This method of treating a bone spur in the back involves physically removing the growth or other bone to alleviate pressure and irritation to the nerve.

For more information on treatments for a bone spur in the back, including surgical remedies, contact Laser Spine Institute. We'll be happy to discuss our minimally invasive procedures, as well as all your treatment options, with you, and we'll even provide a review of your CT scan or MRI by one of our spine doctors, free of charge.
