Bone Spur in the Neck

A bone spur in the neck, also called a cervical bone spur or osteophyte, is a growth of protective bone tissue that is the result of excess pressure or friction between bones. In most cases, these growths are not severe enough to cause any symptoms, and the majority of people with the condition don't even realize they have it. However, if the spur grows large enough and begins to put pressure on a nerve root or the spinal cord, it can cause debilitating symptoms. Because the nerve roots located in the cervical spine extend out to the upper back, neck, and arms, the symptoms will be felt in these areas.

The symptoms that can be caused by a bone spur in the neck include:

  • Pain
  • Tingling
  • Headaches
  • Numbness
  • Limited mobility
  • Muscle weakness
  • More

Treating a Bone Spur in the Neck

There are many options for treating a bone spur in the neck, but most people do not stick with just one. In fact, most doctors recommend multiple treatments used in conjunction with one another for the most effective relief.

These methods can include:

  • Pain medication, both prescription and over the counter
  • Anti-inflammatories
  • Epidural steroid shots
  • Rest
  • Stretching
  • Physical therapy
