What is a Bone Spur
A bone spur is an abnormal bony growth on the end of a bone and are most typically found on weight bearing joints, most common to the spine. These bone spurs may rub against other bones or nerves causing discomfort and pain. Eventually, range of motion and flexibility may be affected.
Studies show that bone spurs are largely prevalent in patients suffering from osteoarthritis. Other common conditions causing bone spurs are plantar and spinal stenosis, as well as spondylosis.
There are other factors that may contribute to the cause of bone spurs, namely weight, nutrition, lifestyle and injury or trauma.
Bone Spur Treatment
There are various treatments that may alleviate the pain and discomfort caused by bone spurs. Depending on the location of the bone spur and the cause of the bone spur, can often dictate the treatment administered to the patient.
Recommended bone spur treatment usually consists of: physical therapy; stretching; deep tissue massage; weight loss; ibuprofen for its anti-inflammatory properties; rest and ice therapy.
Steroids used for bone spurs are also another form of treatment. Depending on the severity of the pain and the effect on the patient’s lifestyle, a corticosteroid injection may be recommended. This is administered to reduce pain and inflammation in the tissue surrounding the bone spur.
Exercises for Bone Spurs
High impact activities may aggravate the pain and discomfort cause by bone spurs. While undergoing treatment, it is often recommended that the patient’s exercise and activity be modified to accommodate the discomfort and pain and possible decrease in flexibility and motion.
There are gentle exercises for bone spurs that may be performed to both improve strength as well as increase range of motion. Water activity - swimming or water aerobics are typically lower impact and have less stress on the body, while improving strength and flexibility.
Home Remedy for Bone Spurs
There have been some very effective home remedy treatments for bone spurs. The most common and easiest of these home remedies is heat/ice therapy. Four to five times a day, the patient will place an ice pack on the inflamed bone or affected area for approximately 10 - 15 minutes. They will then switch to a heating pad for another 10-15 minutes.
Curcumin is a yellow pigment that is found in turmeric. This has been noted as an effective home remedy for bone spur treatment. It is said that if a patient suffering from bone spurs consumes 500-1000 mg of curcumin, three to four times a day for six weeks, the bone spur will be cured. It should be noted that when taking this dose of curcumin, it should be taken on an empty stomach.
Another home remedy for treating a bone spur is to take a flaxseed hot pack and apply to the affected area. This is said to be very effective in relieving pain.
Surgery and Bone Spurs
For those patients who are not able to find relief from the above treatments, surgery may be recommended, most especially for patients who are experiencing a high level of pain and/or limited motion and flexibility. Depending on the cause of the bone spur, these spurs may be removed as part of the treatment or surgical procedure performed to correct the condition.
