Only forty percent of bone spurs will require treatment. Of those forty percent they can be treated in a few different ways. Weight loss is a treatment option directed at the cause of bone spurs. Taking weight off of the affected area will help to reduce stress and strain. Seeing a physical therapist for ultrasound or deep tissue massage can be helpful as well.
Rest, ice, stretching, and Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen can prove effective and are often used to reduce some of the symptoms related to bone spurs. If you have osteoarthritis, education on how to protect your joints is also helpful. If the pain persists your health care professional may suggest a corticosteroid injection at the affected area to decrease pain and inflammation of the soft tissue near the bone spur.
Bone Spurs Surgery
Surgery is usually only considered after conventional treatments have failed.
Foraminotomy
Foraminotomy is a medical operation used to relieve pressure on nerves that are being compressed by the intervertebral foramen, the space in the vertebra where a nerve root exits the spinal canal. A foraminotomy is performed to relieve the symptoms of nerve root compression in cases where the foramen is being compressed by bone, disc, scar tissue, or excessive ligament development and results in a pinched nerve.
Laminotomy
A laminotomy is a surgical procedure that is used to relieve pressure off the spinal canal for the exiting nerve root and spinal cord, increasing the amount of space available for the neural tissue and thus releasing the nerve(s).
